I just noticed something...
The number 3 looks kind of like the number 8 cut in half. The interesting thing, however, is that although the symbol for 3 may be half of the symbol 8, 3 is not half of 8.
Perhaps at one time 3 WAS half of 8, and so whoever came up with the symbols wrote them accordingly...
Or maybe I'm just thinking too hard...
