So after watching a couple of zombie movies this week, I've come to several decisions about zombies and doors, and zombies in general. For reference, the zombies and situations I refer to come from Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and Shaun of the Dead.
VUE 5 Infinite PatchesFirst, in Dawn of the Dead, the zombies can burst head-first through a wooden door in one scene, but bounce harmlessly off of glass in another. That ain't right, I say. If glass was all it took to make a place zombie-proof, I think a lot more people would have survived. But hey, it's just a movie after all, and I think we can forgive the director wanting a bit of tension in the early action of the movie.
Second, my roommate brought up an interesting point. They always had the doors swing outwards, which meant they had to pull the doors shut (and shoot the zombies trying to get in at the same time). Why not just swing inwards for easy live-human access and close the doors on the zombies with physical force? Well, I think that the strength of the zombie-wack, while unable to break glass, might be strong enough to force the door inwards. So basically, zombie-proofing your doors means swinging outwards, and just hoping you've got enough ammo. Zombies can't pull doors open, they're too stupid for that.
Third, and this is in reference to 28 Days Later, I have to say that it is quite the interesting twist. The zombies are far more easy to kill, just shoot them in the chest and they seem to go down. They also starve to death after, well, 28 days. I think the British ought to be ashamed of taking the happy-ending way out. The movie was far more artistic overall, but they made other humans the real enemy, and wussed out by having the good guys win. Doors were far less of an issue with this movie, so I don't have much to say about that.
Lastly, by some bizarre twist of fate, Shaun of the Dead, a parody on the other zombie movies, ended up on television yesterday. I highly recommend you see it sometime, it is great comedy throughout.
Just one final non-zombie-related movie note, Serenity is out in theaters now. I haven't seen it yet but will as soon as I can. I'm sure it will be awesome, I've already heard good reviews from those who saw it opening night.
Enjoy!
